Question: What advice do you have for yourself from 10 years ago?

Answer: Before I share my answer, I first want to mention that I can’t believe that I’ve done this online journaling thing for 50 days in a row! To be honest, it’s easier for me to work out for 50 days in a row than to write for 50 days in a row – although I’ve now done both so far this year! And I believe my sense of self and my spirit is so much better now than it was at the end of 2020. It also helps that I have been able to connect with some really awesome Life Design Catalyst Tribe members so far in 2021, so that helps A TON!

Now, on to my answer. I think I would tell myself 10 years ago to stay true to your path. Ten years ago was 2011, when, for the first time, I felt like I was getting a handle on my work. I wondered how much longer I would last at UNCG, since I wasn’t sure I’d last beyond 5 years. There was such turmoil regarding my position and my work that it just didn’t seem like I would have a chance to last very long. It definitely helped to have great support from my dean and my boss (the Senior Associate Dean). If you told me back then that I would still be at UNCG doing Life Design Catalyst work ten years later, I probably would have laughed at you. And here I am, ten years later, doing this great work. I will say that I wonder if I’ll be there 10 years from now, especially since I’ll be 68 years old! I’m planning on 6 years, when I’ll be 64 years old. I’ll have 20 years into the UNC System, our townhome would be paid off, and the Life Design Institute (or some variation of it) will be generating 7 figures every year, impacting hundreds of thousands of people every year all over the world. How’s that for a vision? It will be interesting to reflect on this post 5 or ten years from now, to see if anything changed between now and that future me. Isn’t this fun?

Other Stuff

This morning, I decided to listen to music for my elliptical workout. As I’ve spent this month reflecting on my past, I had a song that I wish was written when I was younger because it SO resonates with the younger me. As you may know, I didn’t have the best childhood and dealt with a lot of trauma – and tremendous self-confidence issues. This particular song, “Gold” by Britt Nicole, makes me think back how much I needed this song when I was younger – and some days, even now. It has such a great message for those who don’t think they are worthy and/or are not enough. Here’s the link to the video:

And here are the lyrics:

You were walking on the moon
And now you’re feeling low, oh-oh
What they said wasn’t true
You’re beautiful
Sticks and stones break your bones
I know what you’re feeling
Words like those won’t steal your glow
You’re one in a million

This, this is for all the girls
Boys all over the world
Whatever you’ve been told
You’re worth more than gold
So hold your head up high
It’s your time to shine
From the inside out it shows
You’re worth more than gold
(Go-o-o-old, you’re go-o-old)
You’re worth more than gold
(Go-o-o-old, you’re go-o-old)

Well, everybody keeps score
Afraid you’re gonna lose
Just ignore
They don’t know the real you
All the rain in the sky
Can’t put out your fire
Of all the stars out tonight
You shine brighter

This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world
Whatever you’ve been told
You’re worth more than gold
So hold your head up high
It’s your time to shine
From the inside out it shows
You’re worth more than gold
(Go-o-o-old, you’re go-o-old)
You’re worth more than gold
(Go-o-o-old, you’re go-o-old)

Uh, so don’t let anybody tell you that you’re not loved (Not loved)
And don’t let anybody tell you that you’re not enough (Not enough)
Yeah, there are days that we all feel like we’re messed up
But the truth is that we’re all diamonds in the rough (In the rough)
So, don’t be ashamed to wear your crown
You’re a king, you’re a queen, inside and out
You glow like the moon, you shine like the stars
This is for you, wherever you are!
Yeah, yeah, hey!
Go-o-o-o-old

This, this is for all the girls (Whoa, oh)
Boys all over the world (All over the world)
Whatever you’ve been told
You’re worth more than gold (So hold your head up)
So hold your head up high (Ooh)
It’s your time to shine (Yeah!)
From the inside out it shows
You’re worth more than gold
(Go-o-o-old, you’re go-o-old) (You’re gold)
You’re worth more than gold
(Go-o-o-old, you’re go-o-old)

So don’t be ashamed to wear your crown
You’re a king, you’re a queen, inside and out
