Relaxing Music for the week: Language of Silence: Deuter (10:11) –

Question: What do you believe makes the world a better place?

Answer: I believe that the answer to that question is different for EVERY single person on this planet. I know for me, it’s all about helping people optimize their lives and actualize their potential, using the exploration and expression of purpose and meaning to make the world a better place and create hope for a better future. And to be honest, our ability to make the world a better place is infinite. We don’t really know how much of an impact we an make, but we can do something small every day to make the world (or our little corner of the world) a little but better – and I would say 1% better. It might mean donating 1% of your time (14 minutes and 24 seconds) to some worthy cause, contributing 1% of your money in your wallet to a charity, or spending 1% of your time with your family, such as reading to your child or having a conversation with your partner. Is it even possible for you, on a personal level, to spend 1% of your time each and every day working on a big, hairy, audacious goal that moves you towards becoming your best self, preferably in service to something bigger than yourself? I keep harping on this in my classes, but for most of my students, I think it goes in one ear and out the other. This week, I’m talking to them about creating their dream team, a team of people that can support them and challenge them to continually learn and grow and be a better person. And it’s disheartening to see how many just look at their phones and totally ignore the message. But that’s okay…if I didn’t deliver the messages, they wouldn’t get it AT ALL! If I can at least provide something, for a few, it will click immediately, for some, maybe at the end of the semester, for more, by the end of the year, and for some, maybe in 5 years. And there are a very few that may NEVER get it! But I’ve always lived by the philosophy that if you change the mind of one, they could potentially be the one to change the world. And I can live with that!

Anyway, if you want to watch an interesting video about building your “team,” here’s the video I showed in class:

My favorite line is by Will Smith, when he talks about the people you communicate with on your phone. He shares:

“Look at your last five text messages. Are those people feeding your flame or dousing your fire? Put your phone down for just a second and look around, look to the people around you. Are those people throwing a logs on your fire or pissing on it?”

It’s all good, but that’s the part that stood out the most for me. So think about this – are the people around you supporting you, challenging you, and feeding your soul as you become your best self? It matters!
