Question: Do you think happiness is something you find or create?

Answer: I would say that happiness is something you create. I remember in Shawn Anchor’s TED Talk, “The Happy Secret to Better Work,” (a video I highlighted a couple of days ago), where he talks about chasing happiness. For example, if money is attached to your happiness, every time you hit your target money goal, you have temporary happiness, but then you change the goal and the happiness disappears. And for most people, happiness becomes this elusive goal. For me, I don’t chase happiness, I live in contentedness. I don’t usually get too high or too low, I just live in this place in contentment, where I appreciate everything that I have, everything that I get to do, and the people that are a part of my life. That works best for me.

Other Stuff

I’m sending off an article to publish on the difference between transactional and transformational advising. When I was writing a plan to differentiate LDC work from traditional advising, this article came into being. Of course, it didn’t matter, since the School of HHS wants to focus on transactional advising, but at least I’m clear where I stand on the matter (definitely on transformational advising). Here’s a link to the article:

I’m convinced that most transactional advising services will be replaced by technology. However, because of a human being’s need for connection, transformational advising will be around for a while. Relationships matter!
