I just returned from the FYE Conference; enjoyed the experience very much – connected with a few absolutely AWESOME people! It was my first time at the conference in at least 20 years – and well worth it! I’m amazed at how much it has grown!
I presented a session titled, “Reinventing Academic Advising with Life Design in Mind.” In essence, the session outlined how our Life Design Program incorporates coaching for development and coaching for conversation with our students. At the foundation of this work, is purpose (Who am I meant to be?) and meaning (What am I here to do?). And to emphasize the value of purpose and meaning even further, I shared the following video with the group:
Michael Jr: Know Your Why – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZe5y2D60YU
If you get a chance to watch the video, I would love to hear your thoughts on my premise that the choice of college, majors, academic success, student support, and the rest are all the WHAT of college. I would also argue that academic institutions provide little if no support (and should be REQUIRED) to help students find the WHY. If students understand the WHY of college, the WHAT’s of college will make much more sense, have more relevance, have more substance, and provide the motivation and resilience (grit) to be successful.
Any thoughts?
