Question: What is the number one thing you would like to change about your life right now?
Answer: I’m going to list two things because both are equally important. I would love to: (1) be in a more connected, committed relationship, and (2) have greater clarity about the work I’m here to do at UNCG – or somewhere else. Right now, the uncertainty around my work life and my home/personal life is SOOOO up in the air right now, that I’m not sleeping well. I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3 and I’m using it to track my steps, heart rate, sleep patterns, and stress level. I’m doing fine on the steps; unbelievably, I’m also doing well on the stress level, although that’s been rising a little higher now that i started work. Heart rate has been good, with a resting heart-rate in the mid 50’s. However, the sleep thing is definitely a problem. I’ve been averaging about 6.5 hours a night, but some weeks it’s even less. Last week, I had two nights where I got about 5.5 hours, another night 4.5 hours. I’m thinking a lot about work and home; my escape is sports, whether that’s golf, tennis, walking, biking, and hopefully pickleball. And I’m still doing my morning workouts. I’m plugging away, taking each day at a time while plotting a course for my future. This week at work, I’ve been devising a plan to separate Life Design Catalyst work and Academic Advising, to not only create a new Center for Transitions and Transformation, but to also propose a plan to have one director overseeing Advising and one director (hopefully me) overseeing Life Design work. I have this whiteboard in my office with sticky notes posted all over, identifying the pieces necessary to not only make it happen, but to make it successful and thrive. If I come up with nothing, then they’ll have outside (and mostly clueless) people making decisions about our work. If I submit something, at least we might have a chance to dictate what happens to us. And if it doesn’t work out, then I at least have something that I can use as a foundation to create something at another place.
Other Stuff
Today’s article is another reminder on things you can do to improve your life. We’ve now started on the second half of 2021, things are opening up a little more, so if you’re looking at making a change, choose one thing from this list and go for it. Here’s the link (and the pdf):

Here are the two that I will focus on for the next few days:
- Be less self-conscious. (#1)
- Focus on your strengths and uniqueness. (#2)
That should be enough to keep me busy for the rest of the year.
