poise = style + substance

This will be a short post, but I thought it was interesting enough to share with you.

One of my favorite authors, Darius Foroux, just wrote an article about a topic that rarely, if ever, gets talk about: POISE. In short, it’s the balance between style and substance. Here’s the link:

My takeaways:

  • Quote by Audrey Hepburn: “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”
  • Having poise comes from confidence, accomplishment, and an awareness of how one presents themselves to the world. To have poise is to be aware of both how you are perceived by others and how to carry yourself in various situations.
  • The definition of “qualities of substance” is: The skills, habits, and mindsets that determine the way a person works and behaves when they are alone. These are qualities that change the inner world of a person.
  • The definition of “qualities of style” is: The skills, habits, and mindsets that determine the way a person works and behaves when other people are watching. These are the qualities that change the way a person carries themselves in the world.
  • Five ways to develop poise:
    • 1. Use substance as your foundation for everything you do.
    • 2. Develop a unique way of representing yourself.
    • 3. Be mindful of how others perceive you.
    • 4. Show your work.
    • 5. Be the same person when you’re alone.

One of my favorite parts of the article is not about poise, but this quote by Michelle Obama:

  • “If you don’t get out there and define yourself, you’ll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.”

If that quote doesn’t scream “KNOW YOURSELF,” I don’t know what else will do it!

Do you have poise? And how would you know? Ask others – start there!

Enjoy!

  1. When I think of the word poise, there is one person that comes to mind as the very definition of poise. Clarice P. Johnson.
