important career lessons

As I was thinking about my life and my career, I wondered what advice I could give students as they embark on this journey towards meaningful work.  I shared with this this morning that my ultimate goal this semester is for them to understand their place in the world, especially when it comes to serving others profoundly.  When I got back to my office, I knew that I read an article about important career lessons, but I couldn’t remember the article.

Needless to say, I found the article in my “Notes” document; in fact, I actually found two articles about important career lessons.  Needless to say, I was share them both with you, since there are important points in both articles.  As you read the articles, which resonate with you the most?  Which has been the most impactful career lesson you’ve learned?  What’s one that you could work on today?

Here are the two articles (by two different authors):

Here are my two biggest career lessons:

  • Article 1: #5. Don’t let money or your job title define you.
  • Article 2: #12. The meaning of life is to find your gifts and the purpose of your success lies in giving it away.

Both focus on some aspect of purpose – which is DEFINITELY important to me!

What if these were part of a course title, “Career Lessons 101?”  Think that might impact students in a positive way?

What about you?  What are your most important career lessons?
