Question: Do you believe work/life balance exists?

Answer: HELL NO! It’s impossible to separate the two. If life sucks, it’s going to affect your work. And if work sucks, it’s going to affect your life. So there’s no balance between the two; in fact, I would question if you work to live or live to work? I see work (just like I see education) as a piece of the bigger picture, just like health, relationships, etc. I would argue that it’s important to find ways to integrate all of it together, in a way that works for you. There are some people that their work is their play, which makes it even better. Of course, I would even state that there’s a different between education and school, where school is a place you go and education (actually learning) is a always happening around you, whether you’re at school or not. I read a few weeks ago that there’s a new term for work-life balance, now called work-life blend. In our Life Design Catalyst work, we actually focus on three areas: energy, relationships, and service – and trying to find the right mix for those three things. Since I’m a Brian Johnson and Johnathan Fields disciple, it’s easier to focus on the three areas. How’s your energy? How are your relationships? How are you serving and/or contributing? If you’re doing well in those three area, I think you’ll take care of the work-life balance or blend.
