Question: What do you think about the alternative health movement?
Answer: I believe there are possibilities where alternative health strategies can make a difference. As I read more books and articles, I’m finding that there are some really “interesting” was to combat all sorts of physical and mental health issues just by changing your frame of mind. Just recently watched a Brian Johnson note on the book, “Clockwise” by Ellen Langer that talked about increasing life expectancy by at least four years just by thinking about and living life 20 years ago, as long as your focused on the positives, not the negatives. And I know that meditation has been found to relieve a number of different symptoms in one’s life, from depression to stress to disease. It’s amazing to me that we don’t incorporate meditative and contemplative practices into education because of all of the benefits that it provides across many domains in life. We’ve done it in our Life Design classes at UNCG with great success – and will continue to do so until we’re told not to do it or until someone (most likely me) leaves the institution. So consider me a fan of alternative health.
