Question: How much money do you earn? How much would you like to earn?
Answer: When I first started working back in 1989, I made $22,000 as an academic advisor – and I was thrilled! Hard to imagine that I was able to live fine on that salary. The only time when I was driven by money was when my ex-wife had our second child – and I realized that, as the sole breadwinner, I needed to be in a job where I could cover our living expenses. In New Jersey, I made a really good salary working as an Assistant Dean in the School of Business. Interestingly, I was one of the lowest paid Assistant Deans in Schools of Businesses across the country. It didn’t matter to me, I was happy to be working for a great Dean. Of course, all good things must come to an end. Let’s just say that the farther south I went, the lower my salary got. And I came down to North Carolina right around the time the 2008 Recession, so no raises for at least 4-5 years during that period. And to be honest, I didn’t care. I loved the fact that I was moving away from advising, registration, and scheduling and moving towards coaching students. My friend Megan and I created this really cool group coaching program as a course for primarily first-year students. When I originally started the “What Could I Do With My Life” course in the 2008 Fall Semester, we had 40 students; in the 2019 Fall Semester, we enrolled 573 students. But today, the course has been restructured and I wonder if our program will continue to exist. I share all that to answer the second question, “How much would I like to earn?” To me, I can make less in my “job,” as long as I get to do workshops outside the job. I’ve been doing workshops and trainings at other campuses across the country, so as long as I can continue to do that on the side, I can take a lower salary doing my work at an institution in order to expand the work outside my institution. Honestly, at this point of my life, it’s more about the work and less about the job and the pay. Benefits and retirement money are a bonus…
After sharing the above, I realized that I needed to really define what it is that I want right now. I know, in my heart of hearts, that I want to be at a place (like an Office or Center for Transitions and Transformation), where we (my business partner Stephanie and I) can engage in this work on a daily basis. How bad do I want it? Here’s one thing that I need to do:

It’s time to put in the work to make this happen.
