Question: What are you currently saying no to that you’d like to say yes to?
Answer: I just realized that I answered the question for July 17th on July 16th, so today I’m going to answer the July 16th question on July 17th. I don’t think I’m saying no to something that I’d like to say yes to. Nowadays, when I say no, I mean no. I’m more likely to say yes to something I don’t want to do (like go out to eat dinner) than to say no to something that I’d like to do. I think there was one instance this year where I actually said no to playing golf when I actually wanted to play, but I had to help Rebeca with a situation that was more pressing. Now that I think about it, yesterday, I turned down an opportunity to present on a webinar that I think I could make an important contribution; I turned it down because I felt people are tired in the academic coaching world are tired of hearing from me, so I’m just going to take a step back and let others move forward. I think I’d like to explore other areas right now other than coaching, so I take some time moving in those directions. It seems like the other question, “saying yes to that you’d like to say no to” was easier to answer, although now that I ask myself the question, “is this thing I’m going to do or action I’m going to take making me a better person and/or serving something bigger than myself?” it makes decision-making that much easier. For example, in about an hour, I’m off to play pickleball again. Although this was suppose to be something that Rebecca and I was to do together, she went the first time, then cancelled on me last week and decided not to go this week. As I ask myself that question, the answer whether to play or not and go by myself is a resounding “yes” because it is both helping me become a better player AND helping others become better players – and it’s a great connection activity. So I will go…
