Question: Describe an event, situation, or person from your past that became a catalyst for growth.
Answer: There are so, so many answers to this! I’m going to think back to when I left the College of William and Mary back in 2007. I took an Assistant Dean’s position in the Dean of Students Office, thinking that the title and the prestige of being at a prominent higher education institution would make me a more popular speaker and presenter. Well, I was SO, SO wrong about that move. Talk about a poor fit! Let’s just say it’s the ONLY student affairs job I’ve had in 32+ years in higher education – and I don’t think I’ll ever do THAT again! Luckily, it was only for a year, so at least it wasn’t something that lasted a long time. But I actually gave me leave notice before I had a position lined up; I wrote out the exact job I wanted, and two days later a coordinator’s job was posted at UNCG. In a nutshell, I went through THREE in-person interviews, but got the job. I was tasked with coming up with something that no one else was doing. At the same time, I was going through Dream Coach certification and Spiritual Group Coach certification and was able to incorporate those experiences into my work at UNCG, first through small group and then as classes. If not given those opportunities, the Life Design Catalyst Program wouldn’t be what it is today! Yeah!
