Question: What languages do you speak (or you would like to speak)?
Answer: I speak English – and that’s it for the most part. I can understand a few words in Spanish, since that’s a language I learned a little bit when in college – and through watching Dora the Explorer when my daughters were younger. Every now and then, I catch myself watching one of the Spanish channels just to how many words I can pick up. My wife Rebecca is learning Spanish right now, and sometimes I’ll listen in and see what I can pick up. Would I like to learn Spanish at some point in the future? Most likely. Would I like to start today? Definitely not. Not because I don’t have an interest, but because I don’t want to add another thing to my plate right now. I’m still trying to iron out my car issues with my insurance company, hoping to get a decision made REALLY soon so I can take next steps. And with the job situation in flux right now, I don’t need to add another thing on my plate. I look at it this way…if it’s not a “hell yes,” then it’s a “hell no.” And right now, learning Spanish is a hell no, at least until I get a few things off my plate.
This past week, the students in my sections of the “What Could I Do With My Life” course had the opportunity to complete the “Value Tags” activity during class. It’s always a fun activity to do in person because it really gets you to think about what’s most important, but in a more hands-on way. In every class, I had at least one student share that they planned to have someone close to them (partner, parents, or friends) do the activity and have a discussion around them. That’s always fun for me, especially to hear a synopsis of the conversations.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could know and understand the values of our leaders? As I write this, I would LOVE to know what my new boss stands for, what’s important to her. I may give her a set of value tags to see if she’s willing to do them – and dive a little into what makes her who she is today. Does it matter to know your boss/leader’s values? Yes – and check out this article to support it:
- How to Become the Leader You Envision Without Sacrificing Your Values – https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/384086
I think I shared them in a previous email, but I can tell you that my top three has stayed the same for at least the past 15-20 years:
- Personal Development/Growth
And they will continue to be my top three, most likely until I die. What about you? If you’re a leader, have you shared your values with your peeps? If not, why not? Now is a good time to start!
