Question: What have you gained through travel? And what have you lost along the way?
Answer: I have gained/learned so much through travel. It’s been interesting to see higher education through the lens of the different places I’ve been lucky to visit over the years. It’s been a great learning experience to see education through the eyes of the most prestigious institutions, through urban/city institutions, through rural institutions, and through various community colleges. I am convinced that seeing and understanding the challenges at these different places have made me a much better person and a much better teacher and staff member. I think about Life Design Catalyst work, digging deeper to find ways to make it better to serve the students and those advisors and coaches that serve students. I just did a presentation earlier today to advisors and coaches in the North Carolina Community College System, providing them the tools to help students see themselves as “Superheroes,” where they can showcase the best parts of themselves to the world. It was a fun session to host – and when I get the opportunity to do similar sessions at schools and conferences, it’s an absolutely wonderful experience. Such as next week, when I get to present this work at the National NACADA Conference.
I don’t know if I’ve lost anything along the way, since I take every experience as a growth experience. Even the not-so-great sessions. I have always had the mentality that if ONE person finds the information valuable/useful – even in a room of 100 people – that person may be the one to impact the world. So I do Life Design Catalyst work, with all my heart and soul because it might make the difference in ONE person’s life.
