Question: For your environment, do you subscribe to the idea “less is more,” or do you like to surround yourself with belongings?
Answer: I believe in the philosophy of “less is more.” One of my favorite documentaries on Netflix is “Minimalism,” which is about downsizing and owning less. This time last year was the last “official” trip/speaking engagement I had, which was to be the keynote speaker at the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. I was going to be there for 4 days – and decided to pack everything I needed for the four days in two backpacks – including clothes, workout clothes, handouts, laptops, and other stuff. It was right after I watch the documentary, so it was appropriate for me to try it out. Needless to say, it was right when COVID was getting big here in the US, so they ended up cancelling the conference. And that was my last trip. (The bonus was that I got to spend time with my oldest daughter Amanda, so it ended up being a GREAT trip!) Interestingly enough, Rebecca and I was talking about this yesterday to a couple of her friends; we were talking about when we first met. The funny story about me was that I had a folding table and four chairs as my dining room table, a longer folding table and work chair for my office, a bed for me and a bed for my daughters to sleep on when they would visit. I don’t even remember having many books. I had a outdoor bike, a few tennis rackets, and my Schwinn Airdyne. Oh year, and a TV that didn’t work very well. I was made to be portable, where you could pack everything that I own in a small van. Nowadays, I have a ton of books, lots of workout clothes, and various sets of gold clubs/equipment…but I could lose it all and be okay. Less is more is a much less stressful way to live, that’s for sure. More belongings, more stress.
