the year of you, day 136

Question: If you could go back to day one and begin again, what would you do differently in your career?

Answer: I don’t know if I would change anything because everything that has happened to me was for a reason – and to get me where I am today. How fortunate am I to be a part of a college culture for forty years? And the steps I’ve taken were necessary because it helped me realize what’s most important as I’ve grown older. For example, I started out as an advisor at the University of Delaware because I LOVED the thought of working with college students, helping them figure out what to do in life. And in that process, I learned about computer networking, how to use Microsoft Office tools, achieved Assistant Professor status, created the ARC (Advisement Resource Center), and worked with/met some really amazing people. At the College of New Jersey, I was able to move into higher level positions and started to managed people (which I didn’t enjoy). It was here that I started moving away from working for status and prestige and more towards serving and adding value. I can honestly say that my move to the College of William and Mary, even though it was only for a year, made me realize that the title of my position and the prestige of the institution didn’t really matter – it was all about the quality of the work and how it adds value. But this is when I also started getting into coaching as a practice. And now, after 14 years at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, this chapter provided me the opportunity to get clear about the work I’m REALLY here to do – which is to transform lives through purpose exploration. Although I don’t know what the next chapter will present to me (whether it’s at UNCG or somewhere else), I know that everything has happened for a reason. And it has all led me to this point in my life. I just have to remember these three magic words: Keep moving forward.

Other Stuff

So, today’s post is coming from Charlotte Airport; I’m on my way to Phoenix to do a workshop and visit a few friends. But if you want an interesting development on this trip…I found out once I got to the airport this morning that I forgot my cell phones at home! Do I miss them? No. But I’m sure that I may get a few messages that I need to address while I’m gone. SInce I’ve been at the airport, I’ve learned how to send text messages via email, wrote this post, learned how to use a new program, and worked a little on my workbook for the workshop. Amazing what you can get done in an hour! Let’s see how this goes…
