Question: Describe something you’ve done in your life you didn’t think you could do. What did you learn from this?

Answer: The most recent event happened in 2013, when I was asked to present our “Make College Matter” program at one of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s convening in Seattle, Washington. It was always easy to present at conferences, institutions, and schools because it’s my comfort zone; when asked to present at the Foundation event, that was another level. To be honest, my initial response was to not attend, since I had scheduled my own conference at the same time. However, my former Dean (Celia Hooper) encouraged me to attend, since it was one of those potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I won’t lie…I was really nervous presenting the work, but I felt so much better after sharing our work. I learned that it’s easier to present something when it’s at the heart of your being, it’s part of your purpose for living. It’s okay to be nervous, but it’s more important to be yourself. For years and years, speaking in public was really hard for me – so much so that I would NEVER present in front of people. I didn’t feel comfortable speaking up in meetings. But once I got involved with NACADA and running the ACADV Listserv, I had to present sessions and my comfort level improved. Now, I can’t imagine NOT presenting in front of a group. I do still get nervous most of the time, but once I get going, the nervousness disappears.

The one thing that I KNOW I won’t do is drinking wine. I have never enjoyed the taste of wine, so I don’t think that will be on my list. But you KNOW that I have a purpose – and that definitely gets me out of bed in the morning! What about you?
